IGNOU Library System Goes Electronic.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced a suite of e-library services by converting the existing services into e-services and exploring many other ways to support its distance education system such as increasing the scope of e-resources accessed, better methods of seeking information, saving time in the information search and delivery, and significant rise in the use of e-resources and article downloads by students and faculty.

“Physical libraries in the open and distance system have limited potential to reach out to remote users due to limitations inherent in traditional physical collections. With the introduction of digital media and virtual information systems on the web, IGNOU Library System has since been able to overcome the challenges of accessibility to library resources, reaching out the unreached to support curriculum needs of faculty and distance learners through its network of Regional Centres,” said Mr. Sudhir K. Arora, University Librarian.

Over the past five years, the library’s collection of e-resources has grown to over 22,000 full-text e-journals, databases, and e-books, all from leading publishers worldwide.

On campus IGNOU users are able to access these e-resources from any computer connected to the campus network.

Off-campus users can use RATE service (Remote Access to Electronic Resources) for the purpose. This service authenticates authorized users outside of the IGNOU campus IP range to login to e-Library resources.

Launched by Prof. C.P. Joshi, Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Government of India in July 2011, RATE service is at present accessible to academia, faculty, and face to face researchers on IGNOU campus as well as to academia and faculty at Regional Centres.
